Disney World opened in 1971 and if you’re planning a trip to any of Disney World’s parks, you’ll want to know a bit about the history of this magical destination located in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., just outside Orlando.
Disney World is the largest of all the magnificent Disney resorts around the globe. Believe it or not, the park is about the size of the city of San Francisco. It has four theme parks, two water parks, and more than 24 themed resorts. It also boasts an impressive shopping and entertainment zone.

When Disney World opened on October 1, 1971 it had one theme park, the Magic Kingdom, plus three resorts: Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.
Over the years it has grown exponentially and millions of visitors flock to the location each and every year. Walk Disney designed the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in California and they have similar features but also are very different.
Both theme parks have a Main Street USA near the entrance, a castle in the center, and paths that lead to Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.

On the opening day of Disney World, the actress and singer Julie Andrews gave a live performance. Walt Disney passed away before the opening and his brother and Roy O. Disney dedicated the theme park to his brother.
You will find a plaque near the entrance that reads: “Walt Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney… and to the talents, the dedication, and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney’s dream come true. May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place… a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn — together. Dedicated this 25th day of October, 1971. Roy Oliver Disney.”
