The Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World and Disney World, is located in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in the United States. The location is near the cities of Orlando and Kissimmee.

The resort actually consists of four theme parks which are Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Additionally there are two water parks, nearly 30 themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, golf courses, a camping resort, and other spectacular entertainment venues including an outdoor shopping center named Disney Springs.

The complex debuted on October 1, 1971 and the resort is owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

What will your experience be like at this resort? There will be some walking involved as the property covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2). However only half of the land has been used, but still you should expect to wear comfy shoes and expect the tread to get a workout.

The resort was designed to complement Disneyland located in Anaheim, California. Disneyland debuted in 1955 and both locales were developed by Walt Disney.

But Disney World was also intended to present its own diverse array of attractions. When Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966 Disney World was in its planning phase.

After his death the Disney World project was in limbo until Walt’s older brother, Roy, came out of retirement to ensure its success.

Construction began in 1967 and the outline is very similar to Disneyland. Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex in 1971. Next came Epcot in 1982, then Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and in 1998 Disney’s Animal Kingdom premiered.

Disneyland is extremely popular but in 2018, Walt Disney World was the most visited vacation resort destination in the world. On average its yearly attendance is nearly 60 million. As such the resort has become a global hit and is often referenced in popular culture.

In 2020, Walt Disney World was chosen to host the NBA Bubble games for the 2019–20 NBA season. This occurred in a “Bubble” which was restricted to players and necessary personnel, and very restrictive COVID precautions were in place so play could resume safely.
